Processor modules or control modules (Routing Engine) Juniper used in routers or modular chassis to increase system performance. Processor modules are produced for a specific series of routers or modular chassis, and can be suitable for different platforms at the same time (for example. MX240, MX480 and MX960).
Almost all processor modules have 3 part numbers. The ending –BB means Base Bundle (module that is included in the basic package of the router), -S means Spare (spare) and –R - Redundant (redundant, reserve).
Many routing platforms support the installation of 2 identical processor modules in one device. One is configured as the leader (master), while the second (redundant) acts as a backup, and in case of failure of the first takes the role of the leader. On routers with two processor modules (Routing Engines) network convergence occurs much faster than in platforms with a single routing module.
